Importing citations

 Import files from RefWorks 

While logged into ProQuest RefWorks (New RefWorks):

  1. Select the Share button A picture of the Share Button in RefWorks
  2. Select Export References;
  3. Select RIS Format and click Export;
    1. NOTE: this may take a while, depending upon the number of files you choose to export;
  4. Save the new file (likely named export) in a folder where you can easily find it;
  5. In the Zotero desktop application, Select Import under the File menu;
  6. Select A file (BibTeX, RIS, Zotero RDF, etc.), and click Next;
  7. Locate the export.ris file on your computer, and click Open;
  8. Check to have the imported files placed in a new collection, and click Next;
  9. Zotero will proceed to unpack all citations. This may take a while.

 Import files from EBSCO databases 

You can easily import files from EBSCO databases (Academic Search Complete, CINAHL, PsycINFO, etc.) using the following steps:

One document at a time:

Click on the title of the article, and use the Zotero Connector button to pull the citation straight into Zotero, or:

  1. Click on the title of the article;
  2. Select 'Export' from the 'Tools' menu on the right-hand side;
  3. Choose Direct Export in RIS format;
  4. Download the RIS file to your computer;
  5. Open Zotero, select Import from the File menu;
  6. Locate the RIS file on your computer;
  7. Click Open, and Zotero will load the file into your library.
Multiple documents at a time:
  1. Add documents to your folder by clicking on the folder icon to the right of each citation;
  2. After you have added all the citations you want, go to the top navigation bar and click on Folder;
  3. Select the citations you want to add, or choose Select All;
  4. Select Export on the right-hand side of the screen;
  5. Choose Direct Export in RIS Format
  6. Download the RIS file to your computer;
  7. Open Zotero, select Import from the File menu;
  8. Locate the RIS file on your computer;
  9. Click Open, and Zotero will load the file into your library.

 Import files from PubMed 

You can easily import files from PubMed using the Zotero Connector. You can also add files by following these steps:

  1. From your search results, select the title(s) you would like to import;
  2. Click Send To in the top right corner of the search results;
  3. Select Citation manager as your destination;
  4. Click Create File, and save it on your computer;
  5. Open Zotero on your computer desktop, and select Import from the File menu
  6. Locate the new .NBIB file (don't worry; Zotero does accept .NBIB files), and click Open;
  7. Zotero will unpack the files into a new collection.
