Do you want to learn about the inner workings of a library and help provide a positive experience for our users? Do you have high attention to detail and ability to work independently? Cline Library Materials Processing Assistants process physical and electronic materials to fulfill library user requests, assist with shelving and maintaining our collections. This position involves completing a variety of different types of tasks depending on the day-to-day needs of the library, including scanning materials, shelving books, and working at the library’s Ask Us! desk. This position is ideal for someone who prefers not doing the same thing every day, and can work alone but also is comfortable providing assistance at a service desk.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Sort, retrieve, and shelve library materials to fulfill user requests
- Locate and process digital materials from Cline Library databases for Document Delivery Service and Course Reserves
- Efficiently process incoming and outgoing shipment of Document Delivery Service materials
- Assist with digitizing materials for library Course Reserves and Document Delivery Service using a wide variety of specialized software.
- Assist with maintaining the library’s physical collections, including but not limited to shelving, shelf reading (ensuring everything is in order), searching for materials, and shifting collections.
- Communicate effectively with supervisor and teammates to ensure unit efficiency
- Prioritize workload and work quickly and efficiently to meet strict processing deadlines
- Work at the library’s dynamic Ask Us! Desk to effectively communicate and promote library policies and procedures, assist with checkout transactions, and provide general information to library users in person, online, and by phone.
- Remain adaptable to new and changing policies and tasks, demonstrate intellectual curiosity, and be open to learning new innovations and technology.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Enthusiasm about Cline Library, including a willingness to learn and develop on the job and to exhibit outstanding, proactive stewardship of our building and our services
- Efficient planning, organizational and time management skills and the ability to prioritize tasks and meet deadlines
- Ability to learn and accurately communicate a large number of library policies and procedures and appropriately refer library users to the services they need
- Self-motivated, self-directed, well-organized, and able to work effectively with limited direct supervision
- Effectively and confidently use a variety of available resources to solve problems, as well as exercise judgment and initiative when necessary to assist library users
- Demonstrated outstanding attention to detail, reliability, and conscientiousness
- Ability to learn a wide variety of different library processing and collections software and ability to learn and adapt to changing library technology, including demonstrated ability to troubleshoot basic issues with common applications and equipment
- Demonstrated strong verbal and written communication skills—including a strong proficiency in reading, writing, and speaking English—to assist users in person and via phone, email, and web-based chat
- Ability to maintain strict confidentiality with library user records in accordance with federal and state law
- Excellent customer service skills, including a willingness and ability to provide enthusiastic and proactive assistance to library users and coworkers from a variety of diverse backgrounds
- Ability to perform regular cleaning duties, including cleaning computers, tables, and study rooms
- Flexible availability and willingness to pick up additional shifts as needed
Minimum Qualifications:
- Must be an active NAU student (i.e. enrolled in classes and degree- or certificate-seeking)
- Must be available during the 2022 summer sessions and graduating no earlier than Spring 2023

Additional Information:
Work conditions require the student employee be able to lift boxes or push book trucks weighing approximately 50lbs
Students in this position are not permitted to complete homework or read while at work.
