Position Description

Would you like to shape and provide an outstanding experience for customers at Cline Library? Do you take pride in your campus community? Apply to become a Library User Experience Assistant and join a team of people who help make Cline Library a friendly, helpful, inviting, and inclusive place to be on campus! We are looking for applicants who are enthusiastic about our library and campus community, working with people, and providing their input to make our library the best it can be for both NAU and CCC students, faculty, staff, and guests. 

This position works throughout the library building to keep our physical space functional and welcoming, assist library users in retrieving materials from collections, and otherwise contribute to a positive user experience by providing a presence throughout the library. Duties include light cleaning and furniture arrangement, gathering and recording library usage data, retrieving materials from our collections for patron requests, and other duties as assigned.

Library User Experience Assistants serve as Cline Library Ambassadors at library and university outreach events to actively and accurately promote the services, resources, and programs Cline Library provides to the NAU, CCC, and Flagstaff communities. Additionally, this position works at the library’s dynamic Ask Us! Desk to effectively communicate and promote library policies and procedures, assist with checkout transactions, and provide general information to library users in person, online, and by phone. 

This position works throughout the library building to keep our physical space functional and welcoming, assist library users in retrieving materials from collections, and otherwise contribute to a positive user experience by providing a presence throughout the library.  

The successful candidate must be adaptable to new and changing policies and tasks, demonstrate intellectual curiosity, and be open to learning new innovations and technology.

 

Skills and Abilities Needed        

  • Enthusiasm about Cline Library, including a willingness to learn and develop on the job and exhibit outstanding, proactive stewardship of our building and our services       

  • Excellent customer service skills, including a willingness and ability to provide enthusiastic and proactive assistance to library users from a variety of diverse backgrounds      

  • Ability to learn and accurately communicate a large number of library policies and procedures and appropriately refer library users to the services they need

  • Self-motivated, self-directed, well-organized, and able to work effectively with limited direct supervision

  • Ability to perform regular cleaning duties, including cleaning computers, tables, and study rooms

  • Effectively and confidently use a variety of available resources to solve problems, as well as exercise judgment and initiative when necessary to assist library users

  • Demonstrated outstanding attention to detail, reliability, and conscientiousness 

  • Competent knowledge of computer operations and ability to learn and adapt to changing library technology, including demonstrated ability to troubleshoot basic issues with common applications and equipment       

  • Demonstrated strong verbal and written communication skills—including a strong proficiency in reading, writing, and speaking English—to assist users in person and via phone, email, and web-based chat

  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality with library user records in accordance with federal and state law.

  • Flexible availability and willingness to pick up additional shifts as needed

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Must be an active NAU student (i.e. enrolled in classes and degree- or certificate-seeking)

  • Prior customer service or related experience required. Strong service and work ethic are our first priority--we'll train on technicalities of various equipment and software.

  • Must have weekday afternoon and evening availability, and some weekend availability.

Additional Information:

Some physical work may be assigned as needed, including lifting boxes, arranging furniture, and pushing carts weighing 30-40 lbs.
