Position Description

The purpose of this position is to provide a visible security presence within the library and to assist library staff in maintaining a safe and supportive learning environment as well as to assist with coverage of the Cline Library Ask Us! Desk during our late-night hours.  This position has been identified as a safety/security sensitive position and requires satisfactory results from a criminal background investigation/fingerprinting.


Responsibilities:

  • Patrol assigned areas on foot, checking for vandalism, suspicious activity or persons, and safety/fire hazards.
  • Ensure that doors, windows, and other points of building access are secured.
  • Report and document hazards and unusual or suspicious circumstances and behaviors to library night supervisors for correction or follow-up actions.
  • Resolve non-criminal situations using empathy-driven enforcement of NAU and Cline Library policies. 
  • Assist library staff and NAUPD to support the resolution of incidents involving disruptive or criminal behavior.  Collect information on incidents including identity of subjects, comprehensive description of incident, and actions taken.
  • Assist any persons in the building needing directions or information.
  • Provide safety escorts, if requested, for any individual to and from the library and adjacent parking lots.
  • Perform light tidying such as pick up trash from the floors and tables, straighten furniture, etc. 
  • Work on a contingency basis at the library’s dynamic Ask Us! Desk to effectively communicate and promote library policies and procedures, assist with checkout transactions, and provide general information to library users in person, online, and by phone. 


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Enthusiasm about Cline Library, including a willingness to learn and develop on the job and to exhibit outstanding, proactive stewardship of our building and our services 
  • Self-motivated, self-directed, well-organized, and able to work effectively with limited direct supervision
  • Demonstrated outstanding observational skills, attention to detail, reliability, and conscientiousness
  • Ability to learn and accurately communicate a large number of library policies and procedures, and to apply security and safety procedures and policies
  • Demonstrated strong verbal and written communication skills—including a strong proficiency in reading, writing, and speaking English
  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality with security incidents and with library user records and in accordance with federal and state law
  • Excellent customer service skills, including a willingness and ability to provide enthusiastic and proactive assistance to library users and coworkers from a variety of diverse backgrounds


Minimum Qualifications

  • One year previous employment, volunteer or service role with demonstrated ability to perform with a high level of responsibility.
  • Must be an active NAU student (i.e. enrolled in classes and degree- or certificate-seeking).
  • Must be available to begin training mid-August 2023 and graduating no earlier than May 2024.
  • Must be available to work late-night hours (10pm-2am).
  • Federal Work-Study (FWS) Eligible students are encouraged to apply.

Additional Information:

  • This position has been identified as a safety/security sensitive position and requires satisfactory results from a criminal background investigation/fingerprinting.
  • Security Aides shall wear dark-colored long pants or professional skirt, solid-color polo or button-down shirt free of graphics, and closed-toe shoes.  Cline Library will provide a security aide vest, lanyard, nametag, flashlight, and a two-way radio. 
  • Comprehensive training will be provided.
