Embedding videos in Canvas

Note: Due to problems with accessing embedded videos in Canvas, we recommend adding the direct URL in addition to the embedded video (see image below)

Regardless of the streaming service you are using to obtain the embed code, follow these steps to directly add the video to Canvas.

  1. Choose the streaming service and follow the  specific instructions below to get the embed code.
  2. Select the Canvas page where you want to add the video to or create a new page by clicking the +Page option.
  3. Click the Edit button
  4. Locate the Embed button (cloud icon) on the toolbar. If you don't see the cloud icon, click the three dots to expand the toolbar
  5. Paste the embed code into the pop-up box and click Submit

Problems Embedding Videos

Some students have encountered problems playing videos that have been embedded in Canvas. We recommend adding the direct URL in addition to the embedding the videos. Direct URLs can be found following the same directions below with the exception of copying the link labeled link/ permanent link/direct link rather than embed code.

AVON: Academic Video Online

  1. In AVON, search for the title of the video you wish to embed
  2. Click on the title to open the video
  3. Click Share
  4. Select the Copy button next to "via embed code"
  5. Follow the directions above to add the copied link to Canvas.

Films on Demand

  1. In Films on Demand, search for the title of the video you wish to embed.
  2. Click on the title to open  the video.
  3. Click Share
  4. Select the Embed/Link tab
  5. Select the Copy button to the right of the Embed Code
  6. Follow the directions above to add the copied link to Canvas.

Docuseek

  1. In Docuseek, search for the title of the video you wish to embed.
  2. Click on the title to open the video.
  3. Click the embed link located below the video
  4. Highlight and copy the embed code on the pop-up screen
  5. Follow the directions above to add the copied link to Canvas.

Kanopy

  1. In Kanopy, search for the title of the video you wish to embed. 
  2. Click on the title to open the video.
  3. Select Share from the tabs located below the video description
  4. Select the Copy Link button to the right of Embed this Video.
  5. Follow the directions above to add the copied link to Canvas.

Swank

  1. In Swank, search for the title of the film you wish to embed.
  2. Click on the title to open the video
  3. Select Share button to open a dropdown menu
  4. Select Copy LMS Link
  5. Follow the directions above to add the copied link to Canvas.
