Medical Subject Headings (MeSH)

MeSH is hierarchical, with broader and narrower terms. Take a look at the hierarchy for Low Back Pain.

Limit Results by Using Filters

Narrow results by selecting limits on the left-side menu of the results page. Click Show additional filters at the top of the menu to adjust your filters. Once filters are established, conduct your search, and then narrow results by clicking, for example, Humans and English, as shown below.

Create NCBI Account

Log into NCBI or Register for a New NCBI Account to use tools such as save searches, set up email alerts, etc.

Use Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) or Keywords

Select from the PubMed homepage the MeSH Database:

Learn to search with Medical Subject Headings ("MeSH") for a more focused search. Most articles have been assigned specific MeSH headings that reflect what major subjects the article is about. MeSH provides a consistent vocabulary so that you can search for the same subject.

If there is not a Medical Subject Heading for your topic, then use keywords.

Look at the example below. Librarian Tip: Once you find a relevant article, look at the Medical Subject Headings. It may help you find other articles on your topic.

Deconstructing the Abstract

Some PubMed Abstracts are constructed with specific fields to organize information: Study Design, Objective, Methods and Measures, Results and Conclusion

How to Find the Full Text in PubMed Medline

  • Step One: Click on the article title in PubMed Medline. Look for full text links such as an "Online Full-text" link from the NAU Cline Library in upper right:

  • Step Two: If there is not an "Online Full-text" link in upper right or other free full text links, you can request the Cline Library obtain a copy for you.  First, identify the full journal title by clicking on the journal abbreviation in PubMed Medline and select NLM Catalog.   It will display the full journal title. Example: International journal of pediatric otorhinolaryngology
  • Step Three:  Request it if the library does not have the electronic article available.
