Data Management Plans: An Introduction to NIH requirements

Introduction

A Data Management Plan is:

Is a document that describes the data expected/generated during a project and addresses how you will manage and secure that data throughout the lifecycle of a research project

Can be both a funder requirement for grant applications & a living document that is updated as the project evolves

Data is:
“Recorded factual material commonly accepted in the scientific community as necessary to document and support research findings. This does not mean summary statistics or tables; rather, it means the data on which summary statistics and tables are based.” - NIH Data Sharing Policy and Implementation Guidance
This includes metadata. Examples of metadata:
Procedures & protocols
Software, algorithms, scripts used
Generating data
Readme Files
